    Zagreb: points of interest

Zagreb has been the capital of Croatia since 1991. It is a destination which is probably not among the most popular ones, but it can offer authentic surprises, discovering its double soul which combines the traditions and the culture of the Western Europe with the typical ones of the Eastern part of the Old Continent.

Zagreb is divided in Upper Town (Gornji Grad) and Lower Town (Donji Grad); the first one represents the historic and most ancient part of the original centre, whereas the lower town hosts elegant and fine palaces dating to the XIX and XX centuries.

Taking advantage of the car rental service at Zagreb Airport, you can start with a visit of this fascinating city right from the upper town, where there is also the beautiful Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Mary, dating back to the XII century; it was realized in Gothic style and is characterised by two identical spires, more than 100 meters high, that are visible from many points of the city.

Another of the most representative buildings of Zagreb is the Church of Saint Mark in Trg Svetog Marka, in late Gothic style, whose colourful roof does not go unnoticed. In the same square there are the Parliament Palace and the Presidential Palace. You cannot miss the traditional changing of the guard that takes place in front of the Parliament.

Hanks to the car rental service at Zagreb Airport, you can continue your tour reaching the Upper Town, towards Dolac market, historic trade centre and meeting point for the citizens who attend it to buy products coming from the close countries; there are also many stalls of local craftmanship.

The fulcrum of this zone of Zagreb is represented, however, by Kaptol Square, in the middle of which an impressive fountain stands out; not far from it there is one of the liveliest streets in the city, Opatovina, where you can choose also among many restaurants.

Preradovica Square is, instead, the most important part of the Lower Town. Here, the flower market takes place and during the day it is not rare to find shows by various street artists. Other points of interest you must see are Marulic Square and Tgr Marsala Tia Square, where the National Theatre stands out, besides the famous Ilica street, the longest one in the city.

    Zagreb: art and culture

Thanks to the car rental at Zagreb Airport, you can visit in total comfort the museums and the areas dedicated to culture throughout the city; for example, in the Upper Town, in particular, there are the Natural History Museum, the Zagreb City Museum and the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art.

The first one, founded in 1986, preserves one of the most important collections of minerals and rocks, with itineraries divided for themes which narrate in detail the evolution of the animal and vegetal worlds. In the City Museum the history of the city is narrated, starting even from the prehistory up to the current days; here, you can find art objects, texts, documents, medieval collections and much more.

The Galerija Klovicevi Dvori, housed in an ancient monastery of the Jesuits, is the Modern Art Gallery of the city, with an almost 3000 sqm area and more than 2000 exhibited works.

It is the Lower Town, however, that encloses the highest concentration of cultural and artistic places. Here, indeed, there are the Art Pavilion, hosted in a pretty palace in liberty style and periodically used for temporary exhibitions, and Mimara Museum, the most important one in Zagreb that collects artworks of absolute importance coming also from Orient, in addition to paintings by Raphael, Goya and Rubens.

If you would like to admire other art collections, you can visit the Strossmayerova Galerija, which preserves a series of works given to the city by the homonymous bishop at the end of the XIX century. Moreover, there are the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Arts and Crafts, the Modern Art Gallery and the Contemporary Art Gallery.
