Crete Heraklion Airport Car Rental
Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport is the reference airport for those who have to reach the island of Crete, very popular tourist destination.
It is, indeed, a very busy airport for passenger traffic: with its almost 8 million passengers a year it is second only to Athens airport. The most passenger traffic is concentrated in summertime, when many low-cost and national airlines and charters connect this destination to the main European capital cities; while, in wintertime, the flights are limited to connections to Athens, Thessaloniki and some of the major islands of Greece.
This airport, started in 1939 and named after the Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis, is only 4 km far from Heraklion city centre, reachable in short time thanks to the car rental at Heraklion Airport.
You just have to drive along the highway E75 with a rental car, booked on RentalUp before departure and then picked up on arrival at Heraklion Airport. At the terminal there are various facilities for passengers, such as restoration areas, ATMs, currency exchange offices and relax zones.
Heraklion: points of interest
Heraklion is the fifth biggest city in the entire Greece and its origins date back to ancient eras. Unfortunately, during the Second World War it was heavily damaged and many of its historic palaces were destroyed. Though these huge losses, Heraklion still has many treasures of the past, preserved mainly in the museums, that collect some worldwide famous pieces.
Even though it has been inhabited since the Neolithic, the city knew its maximum splendour as harbour of Knossos, which is about 5 km further south. In the XIII century it was conquered by the Venetians and became the capital of this Republic in the Aegean Sea.
Later, it underwent heavy attacks by the Turkish, whom the city was handed over in 1669. Once arrived, you will soon be amazed by the impressive XVI century walls, which can be crossed for all their 3 kilometres passing some symbol places like the Gate of Kornarou; the fortress and the arsenal are from the same period. It is pleasant, in the evening, to walk across Plateia Eleftherias, thanks to the presence of many bars. Moreover, you cannot miss Parco El Greco and Agios Titos, a X century church named after the patron saint of Crete. The car rental at Heraklion Airport will allow you not to miss any of these wonders!
Heraklion: art and culture
But this city is identified with its wonderful Archaeological Museum, born to collect the numerous findings of this island, very important from a historical point of view. It is such a beautiful and interesting collection, that it needs at least two days to be thoroughly visited. You can admire objects from Neolithic age, ancient jewels and pots and many mosaics from the palace of Knossos, like “Blue Birds”, “La Parisienne” and “Bull-Leaping”.
Among other interesting museums to be visited thanks to the comfort of the car rental at Heraklion Airport, there are the Historical Museum, the Christian Art Museum and the Natural History Museum: enjoy a full immersion in this charming Greek island!
