From the Dome to Sforza Castle

When talking about Milan, you soon think to a dynamic, modern and laborious city, without taking in consideration the many historic and architectonic beauties, which indeed deserve to be discovered with particular attention.

The Cathedral is the undisputed symbol of the city! Its construction started in 1385 and went on through the centuries with many transformations. Madonnina, for instance, dates back to XVIII century and the frontal façade was ended in the Napoleonic era. It is one of the biggest churches in the world, enriched with 3400 statues, spires, stained glass windows and a polygonal apse.

From its terraces, which are reachable by lift, you can enjoy a stunning view over the city and the square which hosts also the Royal Palace, nowadays seat of expositions, and Arengario, which dates back to fascist era; now it is the seat of Museo del Novecento where you can admire the painting Quarto Stato by Pellizza da Volpedo. In front of the Dome, in direction of Via Cordusio, you cannot miss Piazza dei Mercanti with the typical exterior gallery and the XVII century building Palazzo dei Giureconsulti.

Sforza Castle was built by Galeazzo Visconti as a defensive building between 1360 and 1370 and then it was transformed several times until the current architecture. It hosts many interesting museums, Pinacoteca and Civiche Raccolte.

    Vittorio Emanuele Gallery

Another symbol of Milan is the Vittorio Emanuele Gallery, overlooking Piazza Duomo and connecting this latter to Piazza Scala.

Vittorio Emanuele Gallery is an elegant covered pedestrian street where you can find luxury boutiques, bookstores, cafes and restaurants and events are often organised here inside. The construction started in 1865 on a project by Giuseppe Mengoni and the king himself laid the foundation stone.

It is cross shaped and in the intersection there is the dome, also said octagon, under which you can admire four painted moons representing four continents. On the floor at the feet of the dome you can admire a mosaic representing a bull, on which, according to the tradition, you have to turn three times on your own heel for good luck.
