Ancona Falconara Airport Car Rental
Ancona Falconara Airport
Ancona Falconara Airport was built in the 1930s on the initiative of the Province of Ancona, with the aim to build a makeshift military camp, where aircrafts and airships could land in case of difficulty. It is located in Castelferretti, at about 18 km far from Ancona city centre.
In 1939 this airport was registered in the national list of civil airports. During the Second World War, the airport was occupied by the allies and it was used as a NATO’s base until the early 1960s.
At the end of the 1960s the airport, which is named after Raffaello Sanzio, slowly got back to its normal activity, with flights to Italy and abroad. Nowadays it represents the only international airport in the Marches and it is well connected through the highway A14. You can move along the highway SS16, which is connected to all the main roads of the area, to get to Ancona.
Ancona Old Town
The beautiful city of Ancona is located on a promontory of Monte Conero, that gives rise to the gulf of Ancona. The Marches’ chief town is placed along the Adriatic coast of the Centre of Italy and boasts many places of great interest from the cultural, historical and artistic point of view.
In the city, for example, you can admire Piazza del Plebiscito, that is also called Piazza del Papa in tribute to Clement VII, who in in 1700 committed himself to increase the economy of this place.
The statue of this pontifex is, indeed, the symbol of this place and around it there are the Government Palace, an important monument, and the civic tower with its clock.
On your itinerary you will find also the Mole Vanvitelliana, also known as Lazzaretto: it is a pentagon-shaped building which is placed on an artificial islet and connected to the mainland by a drawbridge.
Picking a rental car up at Ancona Falconara Airport, after having booked it online on RentalUp, you can discover all the corners of the city, that is rich in places of worship. The most famous is the Church of Santa Maria della Piazza, which was built in 1100 on the remains of a Paleo-Christian basilica and has a very original shape.
Finally, it is worth a visit to the Civic Pinacotheca Podesti, which, though small, is very interesting because it contains works by little known artists from the Marches, and the Trajan’s Arch, built in 100 b.C.
A tour into the Regional Park of Cornero
Among the places that make Ancona and the Marches valuable tourist destinations, there is also the Regional Park of Cornero, which extends partly in the territory of Ancona.
The park is rich in paths to be crossed by foot, by horse ride or by bike, in a large area which includes, in addition to Ancona, also Camerano, Numana, Sirolo and Portonovo.
It is an enormous natural area, where you can admire the Mediterranean scrub and many other species of plants, trees and animals.
The Visits’ Centre of the Park is very interesting: it is an exhibition centre where you can discover a lot of things about the ecosystem of one of the most important Italian parks. You will also have the exciting opportunity to climb and explore Monte Cornero, from where you can enjoy a stunning view over the park.
At the feet of the mountain there is a really fascinating ancient quarter of fishermen, which gives access to the beach of Portonovo.
